Task 2 / Typographic Exploration & Communication (Text Formatting and Expression)
2.5.2023(week 5)
“In this task you will be asked to express typographically the
content in this link in a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x
200mm per page). Choose 1 from the 3 text options provided.
No images are allowed. However, some very minor graphical
elements, i.e. line, shade, etc. might be allowed.” ——description of the task.
First step-research
First and foremost, I read on the module about what the task needed. After that, I go and download the text and choose the text that I like, I have chosen for tittle—" A code to build on and live by". I think of what the title is defining, it is defined as a direction or a goal to build and let us live by, and I think the code can be as like computer code and think of building a house using code so we can live by.

I think of what the title is defining, it is defined as a direction or a goal to build and let us live by, and I think the code can be as like computer code and think of building a house using code so we can live by.
Next, I go to find of the layout on Pinterest as reference.
But it seems that the sample on Pinterest are too advanced for me and most of the sample are using images, so I cannot use it as reference for me. I tried to see on the sample e-portfolio on Facebook pages, It turn out I get some idea on the headline and layout although it's not the same title, but it gave me some direction on the task.
Second Step-Headline Draft
First of all, I start to draft on the headline using adobe illustrator, I just copy the headline and put in the text box first, I use the Universe type font and use the code to become a triangle and enclose the word" to build on and live by". It seems simple but not necessary, and it looks kind of ugly too.
Secondly, I turn the alphabet A into a text box, and I copy the title into the A, I get this idea from the illustration I do it for the IVN class, and below the crossbar of the uppercase "A". the text inside the A is just like the computer code, but I am using the text as the code. It can be defined as I am using the title to build a huge A and let the bold title live by the Huge A like the title live below the house but house is an A
figure 1.4 idea 2 (7.5.2023)
Thirdly, I just copy the text into the textbox and turn into outline, I tried on building different composition of the title just like the past year sample work, I get this idea from most of the title in most of the book cover, but I am not that good in doing composition, I made the word "code" into text box and fill in the morse code, All of the alphabet for the code have it's own morse code(C=-.-. O=--- D=-.. E=. I just relies the alphabet E I just use the wrong morse code." and I made the verb in the title into bold to highlight it.Third Step - layoutFirstly, I tried on sketching the layout on paper first and take past year portfolio as reference, I makes some sketches on my idea as the figure below. I tried to use justified at the first place because it just a rough sketch, I haven't thought of doing the kerning, line length, leading.
For the first submission in the FB page, I have submitted 3 rough layout, I have been told to do all of the adjustment at that day before I post in the Facebook page, I am thinking of just checking the headline but in the end, it was giving feedback on the whole layout.
For the text I am using Futura book and Futura bold as the typeface
9.5.2023(week 6)
After getting feedback from MR Vinod in the classes, I just give up on the headline I have did before, I am using layout 3 as the preference to make a new layout and I have created a new headline.
figure 2.0 Headline (10.5.2023)I am thinking of creating some layout more creative, not just the headline using a whole page, I decided to put the headline in the middle of the pages. and put the last sentence of the text below the headline as making it the most important quote in the text.

figure 2.0 Headline (10.5.2023)
I decide to put the last sentence of every paragraph as Futura std book oblique, the text remained as book and I extracted the first sentence and put it as bold, it will create like a title above every paragraph.
But Aater I had seen the text, overall, I think is good, but I am considering of the readability as the headline is putting in the middle of text. Most of the book won't be putting headline in the middle of the pages as it will be hard to read if the book is too thick. I decided to change the headline back to the first pages as the pages on the left. I am putting three columns in a page, and put the text format as 2+1, two column and one column.
figure 2.4 Layout 6 (18.5.2023)
Before my submission, I found out that a huge mistake in my task, I forget about my number of texts per line, I longest text per line are about 80 texts, so I decided to change the column to four column and do the adjustment into it.

FEEDBACK
Week 6(9.5.2023)
General feedback: be careful in the cross alignment, and the length too. Do not use Bodoni in body text because of the stroke. Specific feedback: The headline morse code in the CODE is a good idea, but the readability of the code is too low, and specify A built by code is meaningless. The composition of the third headline of mine is too messy.Week 7(16.5.2023)
General feedback: ensure our e portfolio are update every day to avoid something unpresentable work submit. Specific feedback: I need to put more effort on the e-portfolio, my e-portfolio layout is bad.REFLECTION
Experience
In this task 2, we are required to use all the knowledge than we have in the past five week in this task 2.
I am not that good in typography class as this my fault that I am not putting too much effort in typography class, I need to do this task just using about three weeks when the task is announced by MR Vinod, I found out that I am not good in designing E-portfolio, my E-portfolio is quite messy, when I am seeing work from the other person, I knew that my work was worse than I thought, I need to improve more in decorating E-portfolio. For this task 2, I am not doing too well whether is for the headline design or the layout part. But I think I have done my part already.
Observation
I found out that I need the improve my ability on adjusting text, I am not doing the text formatting part well. On the other hand, I most likely doing last minute work, this is a huge "nono" for me, if I want to do it better either design or other work, I need to change on this.
Finding
Through doing this task 2, I found out that how a little part will affect the text readability. Other than that, I found out that I was being lock in a small circle, I cannot jump out of this small box to think more creative, lack of knowledge is the key to this problem, "Knowledge is Power" by Francis Bacon, this is a famous quote that I need to remember all the time in order to improve. And I found out that I am lazy to read, no matter for the further reading part or after I am done in E-Portfolio, I never look back, so this cause me I don't know what the matter is. And, when I am doing further reading is before the last submission date, I just read and find something very helpful for me and an answer for me, I have a little regret why I just read the book before the submission time.
FUTHER READING
I just simply find a book to read only, but after I read, I found out that it is super helpful for me If I have read this book in the past few weeks, I am just able to read a few pages. Most of the part is just my note to remind me
This page is about using multicolumn grid. When working with multicolumn grids, it is essential to balance three interdependent variable which is type size, line length and interline, it is just like a triangle, when I adjusted one of them, I need to adjust all
(Experimentation with multicolumn grids can yield visually surprising and functional results. Columns can be shifted horizontally and vertically, placed at opposing angles, or behave in ways extending typographic tradition. However, such effects should only be used when they contribute to the interpretation of the text)-this is a note for me
figure 3.3 page 73 and 74
About the 73 page, it is about example of using single column grids, and for the page 73, it is about multicolumn grid, it is the first page of the multicolumn grid part, Before any decision can be made about the construction of the typographic grid, the designer must first become thoroughly acquainted with the amount of text, its content, the audience for which it is intended, and the medium used for its delivery
It is about using single column grid. When the text is simple, linear narrative, traditional novel, exhibition, it is advised to use single block. it is related to budget constraints, standard paper sizes, and the function of typographic information. It is important for designer to think of the proportions. Always consider the
text block and the margins of the page as
a proportional system. Using the right typefaces, adjusting letter and words, linespacing and the proportion are the issues that I need to pay attention on
figure 3.5 page 69 and 70
This two-page is about using the basic square as golden section is the basic square, many patten are using basic square as well, removing line from the grid can discover new
spatial divisions the example on the page 70 is the possibilities of removing line from grid. So, basic square is important
