Task 3 Type design and communication

Week 7/16.5.2023

TASK 3 Description:  design a limited number of western alphabets.

1. choose an existing font design that adheres to the direction that you would like to head in.
2. Study the font carefully by analyzing its anatomical parts.
3. Start with rough sketches, explore a variety of options and upon approval begin digitization     of the drawings—software for digitization Adobe Illustrator and later Font Lab.
4. Artworks shall be printed out for critique sessions followed by refinements.
5.create a typeface that has the hallmarks of a good typeface, subtlety or character, presence,    legibility and readability.

...Research...

Figure 1.0 research

I do some research on Bembo std, I found out that some of the heights are not the same, it would be some overshoot on the top, example as the alphabet C, it was taller than the alphabet R and the counter space inside is kind of same.

...Exploration...

- writing diagonal, horizontal, vertical and circular lines for all 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool
- writing AOTMX for all 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool
select 1 option from the 5 different options from each tool and write "a e t k g r i y m p n" in the selected style. Choose either UPPERCASE or lowercase to write in.

Figure 1.1 Exercise 5 tool (28.05.2023)
In the first place I used superfine as the most common tool, I tried different angle to write ,It resulted quite normal. Next, I used Round to write, it resulted the writing being fat, I used semi broad highlighter, It resulted in the angle, If I used the shape edge, It be thinner, and I used the whole edge , it showed that the stroke being thick. After that, I used brush using some ink, I am not quite good in using brush, it's hard to control the stroke, It's a bit messy. For the irregular tool, I used earbud and use it as a pen, It quite same as round but more thicker.
Figure 1.2 Exercise (28.05.2023)
At last, I used the five tool and write alphabet "AETKGRIYMPN", The result is on the above figure. I like the superfine stroke, as it's attracted me with it's tidy stroke.

Figure 1.3 Practice (29.05.2023)
I have chosen the superfine stroke, and I started to explore using different angle, different style, different strength to write it.
Figure 1.4 Practice 2 (29.05.2023)
I wrote for the whole pages of the paper using the superfine pen to find out the one to digitize.

Week 9/30.5.2023

...Digitization Exploration 1...

Figure 1.5 sketch (30.05.2023)

I started the digitization process with doing choosing the sketch I like and crop it into one line, insert into Adobe illustrator.
I created the guide according to the guide given by Mr. Vinod
Cap line: 745 pt
Median line: 500pt
Baseline: 0 pt
Descender line: -200pt
Figure 1.6 Guideline (30.05.2023)

Figure 1.7 Digitization progress (05.06.2023)
I created the diagonal, horizontal, vertical stroke and combine into the alphabet, it makes my job easier beside from A K G P stroke, It have a counter space inside and the K stroke is hard to control, in last place, I turn all of the counter space into perfect circle in order to have the same characteristic. I used the pencil tool and smooth to let the stroke to be smoother, but it resulted of out of control, it's showed the alphabet is not a family not a font. So, for the first attempt, it's a big failure.
Figure 1.8 first Attempt (06.06.2023)
It resulted that the alphabet not looking the same, some of the strokes are thinner, some thicker.

Week 10/06.06.2023

...Digitization Exploration 2...

So, the
first attempt above is a failure, I just deleted the work, and restarted the digitization process from the beginning, I created a line for the same angle, and also the stroke, I control the stroke size and where it's going to in the same for all of the alphabet, started from the beginning.

Figure 2.1 Second Attempt (13.06.2023)
I got some feedback from lecturer, I know that my height is not the same and counterspace need to work on it, it not the same, the alphabet" N" need to become straight otherwise it looks weird, not the same as other alphabet, all of the punctuation needs to be re-do.

Week 11/13.06.2023

...Digital Exploration 3...

Figure 2.2 Third Attempt (16.06.2023)

...Font lab...

After my updating on my digitized word on Adobe Illustrator, I imported the work into Font Lab, in order to make it as a font not just jpg image. When I were inserting the alphabet into font lab, I found out that some of the height not the same, and also the position become weird. After some trying and adjustment, I found out the mistake of inserting into font lab.

Figure 2.3 Font lab (18.06.2023)
After I insert all of my letters into font lab, I tried to adjust the kerning and the letterspacing between the letters, to let the readability to be improved, I tried different combinations of the letter form.

Figure 2.5 Letterform after adjustment (18.06.2023)
I named my font as Mysterio Wl , Mysterio is to be mystery and the Wl is my name

...Poster...

After that I export as font and use it as font for the first time in the Adobe illustrator, created some poster.

Week 12/20.06.2023

...Poster...

After some feedback and correction, I come out with three kinds of poster.

Feedback

Week 8

independent week

Week 9

General feedback: Mr. Vinods provided some advice on our letterform creation practice. For the letterform we created, we need to have some characteristic on it, on the digitization process, it might have some changes, but in a positive changer would be good, it can be defined by it positive or negative by experience.
Specific feedback: I am told to watch the video on the YouTube first before I start to digitize the word, and I need to create more characteristic.

Week 10

General feedback: Most of our letterform don't have the same characteristic, It seem to be individual letterform, not typefaces, we need to create a typefaces but not just letterfrom
Specific feedback: I need to redesign the letterform, because all of them are individual, the digitization process are to be more controllable and optimistic then our handwriting.

Week 11

General feedback: The counter space of the alphabet needs to be related the alphabet O,and we need to do the punctuation mark by watching the ig post in fb pages. Specific feedback: The letter N, P, G need to be redone as well as the punctuation mark too.

Week 12

General feedback: Need to put more effort on doing the kerning part, the poster needs to include all of the alphabet we design, always check it. Be creative, don't locked by the rules and guide only. Specific feedback: The background of the poster can put into white and the word change into white, the kerning need to be adjusted.

REFLECTION

Experience

Task 3 project is the longest and most boring project that I did in typography, it need time and redo at all times to be more perfect. It needs time and clear measurement to make it a font not just drawing or illustration, it took me almost 4 weeks to do the whole project, I am spending most of the time this four week on typography because of this project, if this four week doing assignments is 100%, I almost used 60% of doing assignments time on this project. It is frustrated when doing this assignment, keep improving the word design and redo it especially for the punctuation mark. But it is a great experience to do this kind of work that made me to be stressful.

Observation

Through research on this project, I found out that most of the alphabet are not the same height as size as I thought it would be the same size. Because of the overshoot of the alphabet, it would not be the same tall as other.

Findings

I found out that when I am reading novel, I started to put some effort on the word after I did this project. It actually a distraction for me while I am reading but it's also a good learning opportunity. I found out that why typography need to be existed in this world and every designer are not that easy as other people said.

Further reading

Figure 3.3 A type primer by John Kane
The book is about letterform creation that is the knowledge I need to complete my project 3. it kinds of same as the book that I read for task 2. the basic of the letterform example like stroke, counterspace and more. Timeline history that I don't like and the letterform creation part as the knowledge I need in this project.

The space between the median and baseline named as the x height, It's important on maintaining the x height when creating the letterform

The basic principle on graphic design refer to Rudi Ruegg, example like light and bold, contended and extended to improve the contrast of the letterform.

The most common proportion is using the golden ratio proportion a:b=b:(a+b) 1:1.618

Recto: the right handed page, this page is always odd number ( 1 page is always using recto)
Verso: The left handed page.

Text type should be readable from half a meter (1.9 inches) from the eyes
